Damp and humid, bathrooms are the perfect breeding ground for potentially dangerous mold and mildew. Learn how to get your bathroom sparkling clean and fungus-free. When a bathroom has water splashing over bathtubs, mold can form at the baseboards. Avoid mold problems with tips from a housekeeper in this free video on cleaning bathrooms.
Step 1: Seal it off
Seal off the area from the rest of your home. Cover heat registers and ventilation ducts or grills.
Open a window, if possible, before you start cleaning.
Step 2: Scrub it down
Put on the protective gloves, face mask, and goggles. Use a sponge and bucket filled with a strong solution of trisodium phosphate and water. Scrub down the cabinets and anywhere else mold is present.
Step 3: Apply chlorine bleach
Apply the chlorine bleach and leave it on for one to two hours. Rinse the surfaces thoroughly with water.
Step 4: Brush on primer
Brush on a stain-killing primer and let it dry as directed. Then paint the cabinets with a mildew-resistant latex paint.
Step 5: Use prevention
Use preventative measures to keep mold and mildew from returning. Clean your bathroom regularly and consider adding a ventilation fan ducted to the outside to remove the humidity that causes mold.
Mold can appear in many colors, including orange, pink, blue, white, green, black, or brown.
