When considering what room to remodel in your home, choose to do the project that will give you the most return on your investment; the best choices on that condition is to remodel the kitchen or bathroom. Unfortunately, each of these rooms are often the most expensive projects for remodeling. Luckily, there are several different ways that you can modernize and update the look of your rooms, without emptying your bank account.
Tin Ceilings
Tin ceilings have been used throughout the decades as a way to increase the richness and design personality of a space. Recently, tin ceilings have experienced a renewed popularity for use in a wide range of spaces, including kitchens and bathrooms. Using a tin ceiling product is not only unique, but it’s also easy to install, and made in several more affordable forms. While there are cheaper ways to change the look of your ceiling through stucco or paint, tin ceilings are still lower in price than more expensive ceiling remodeling projects. Tin ceiling tiles also provide a way for you to still match the design of the ceiling to other metal elements in your room, such as fixtures or cabinetry hardware, through the wide range of metal and painted looks available. For those on a more strict budget, faux ceiling tiles are also available, which can be painted to fit the style of any room, at a more budget-friendly cost.
Glass Tiles
Glass tiles have become a favorite among some eco-friendly designers as a wider range of recycled glass tile products have entered the market over the years. Both new and recycled tile products come in a rainbow of different colors, allowing you to match the tile to the personal style of your kitchen or bathroom project. Glass tiles can be utilized in many projects including kitchen backsplashes, accent walls, shower walls or shower floors. Even better, glass tile installs nearly the same way as regular tile, making it easy to install, as well as easy to maintain.
Flooring Options
Flooring is also seeing an increase in available green and eco-friendly options for home design in both the bathroom and kitchen. Teak, cork and bamboo are all commonly available options in both hardwood and engineered hardwood forms. Engineered hardwood flooring has the added benefit of being more affordable, as well as has a greater stability against moisture and heat, which is important in moist or wet environments like a bathroom or kitchen. While in the past hardwood has been more reserved for living rooms or bedrooms, the popularity of running hardwoods throughout the home to tie the design spaces together continues to increase.
New Hardware
Changing out the hardware of cabinets and drawers is easily one of the fastest, easiest and most affordable ways to change the look of a room. Outdated fixtures can quickly bring down the look and even the value of kitchen and bathroom spaces. With just an electric or manual screwdriver, you can easily remove old hardware and install new knobs, pulls or handles. In many cases you may be able to change the entire look of the room for less than $100. For those on a stricter budget, metal paint can also be used to change the look of your current hardware. Just be sure to thoroughly clean your old hardware first, and follow the manufacturer’s direction on the paint can.
