How to repair or replace a leaky Sink Faucet? Kitchen and bathroom sink faucet repair and vanity faucets replacement is not so difficult. It doesn’t matter if you want to change the kitchen, bathroom or utility sink faucets because it is a straight job to do.
The first thing you will want to do is to get your replacement faucet and have it on hand to install when you remove that old one. There are a few different designs and you will have to decide which you want. You can get single handle or double handle faucets for your sinks and bathtubs. Most faucets are pretty standard on their hook-ups meaning that kitchen faucets are usually 8 pouce. bathroom vanity faucets are normally 4″, and bathtubs usually are 8″.
If you have double handle faucets all you need to do is measure from center to center of the handles and this is the size of the faucet. If you have a single-handle faucet you will need to measure the distance between the water hook-up lines on the bottom of the faucet to get your measurement. Once you know the size and style of your faucet you are ready to remove the old one and install the new one.
You will not need a lot of tools for this project. You will need wrenches to hold the shut-off valve to remove the supply line going to the faucet. You will need a basin wrench or channel lock pliers to remove the large nuts holding the faucet to the sink. A basin wrench is really the best way to go since it is designed to work in the tight space where the faucet mounts to the sink.
The process of removing and replacing your faucets is much the same for all sinks and vanities. The following process should not need to be varied much by anyone:
1- Turn off supply of water to your faucet
2- Remove supply lines from both sides of the faucet
3- Remove large retainer nuts holding faucet to sink
4- Remove faucet from sink and clean your sink where the old faucet was
5- Place new faucet in the holes( here it would be good to have some help holding faucet in
place keeping it centered and straight while you install retaining nuts on the bottom.)
6- Once retaining nuts are tight hook-up the water supply lines
7- Turn on water supply and check for leaks
Some people recommend placing plumbers putty between the faucet and sink but I normally do not since most faucets come with a gasket that serves its purpose rather well. You should, toutefois; place either pipe dope or thread tape around the supply line connections on the faucet to prevent dripping. It is not necessary to do this on the end of the supply line that connects to the shut-off valve as it is a compression fitting with a gasket.
The process for bath tubs and showers is much the same with the exception of the water connection. Sometimes a tub and shower faucet will have vertical water hook-ups and sometimes they will be horizontal. If you are going to change these faucets you should look at the type of eater hook-up you have and if your new faucet is different you should check at the local hardware store for the fittings you will need to make your new faucet work. Encore, make sure you use thread tape or pipe dope on any fittings you make to prevent water leaks and have fun with your new faucets.
